Encinitas Location

Enter the cozy city of Encinitas, 25 miles north of San Diego, through Interstate 5 to Encinitas Boulevard in the west or take a coaster train ride to Moonlight Beach or drive along Historic Highway 101. 60,000 residents cover the 21.5 square miles of prime estate land tucked between the Batiquitos Lagoon on the north and the San Elijo Lagoon to the south, which is Encinitas. Six miles of rugged coastline along the Pacific Ocean border it. Solana Beach is the closest city to its south. Commuter rail lies between Oceanside and Downtown San Diego, with stops at Oceanside, Encinitas, Solana Beach, and Sorrento Valley. From Oceanside the commuter service called the Coaster provides services to Orange and Los Angeles counties.

Real Estate in the Community of Encinitas

Encinitas is derived from Encina Canada, Spanish for 'Hills of Live Oaks ', which surround El Camino Real.

Five different communities: Cardiff-By-The-Sea, Leucadia, Olivenhain and Old and New Encinitas, each with a unique origin came together to form the city of Encinitas in 1986. These towns were encouraged to keep their identities and this attests to the unique blends of old and new that Encinitas has to offer.

To the North, English settlers fond of Greece established 'the Isle of Paradise ' or more commonly known as 'Leucadia ' with its narrow streets and cottages offering the oceanic view in 1885. It is famous for the Huge Eucalyptus trees that line the thoroughfare on the Coast Highway.

Quaint little homes spread over the hills of 'Cardiff-By-The-Sea ' in the south. The lots are smaller in this town over looking the sea.

Towards the southeast lies, 'Olivenhain ', German for 'olive grove ' offers plenty of open horse country, pastures, and a rural way of life.

Encinitas itself was made up Old Encinitas, along tree lined Highway 101 (west of I-5), a happy old-fashioned place where the surfboard business thrives, while New Encinitas, mostly spread along El Camino Real, home to Self Realization Retreat and Hermitage and the Moonlight Beach, is in stark contrast a town with new plazas and tract housing.

The Farmer 's Market in Old Encinitas on Fridays, the Seaside Bazaar and the new candle shop/salon Divinity are a must to visit almost every other weekend.

With a temperature of between 60 to 75 degrees the year round, Encinitas is the perfect place for checking out the historic architecture, quaint shops and sidewalk cafes at Downtown 101 shopping district which itself boasts to be over a 100 years old.

Real Estate in Encinitas
The city of Encinitas is becoming a retiring haven, especially for those who want to spend their time by the coastal areas. The homes throughout the whole city have the same housing style, which are a mixture of cottages, custom homes and suburban models, many of them old, and ready for remodeling. Moving east, the Pacific ambiance fades into suburban countryside. Thousands of new one and two-story homes, with two or three car garages have been built here in the past 5 years, these houses are sprawled on larger lots, some of them mansions. A safe family community: kid-friendly, and beautifully situated.

Encinitas Schools

As the population increases, new schools are opening in Encinitas. Currently there are six Public Elementary, two Public Middle, four Public High and Eight Private schools in Encinitas. The community shows a healthy support for good education.

The San Dieguito Union High District has a ranking hitting the 99th percentile and tops in the state. La Costa Canyon High School draws many Encinitas students.

Encinitas Recreation and Entertainment
The city of Encinitas is in essence a surfing town. Rated as one of the top ten surfing cities by Surfers magazine, the six miles of  coastline offers a beach for every soul. If you want to ride the waves, Swami's the place, located at the southern end of Encinitas. Or if you to make those other kind of waves Moonlight Beach, a quintessential Southern Californian beach, near Third Street and Encinitas Boulevard, is the place to make silvery memories.

If you'd rather keep your feet on the ground yet on the roll, try skateboarding at The Magdalena family YMCA. Or you can chose to stretch, twist or roll on the ground at Ashtanga Yoga Center for a less enthusiastic yet relaxing activity. Encinitas Ranch Golf Course with its panoramic oceanic view at the crest of Leucadia Boulevard is an irresistible temptation for golfers of all abilities.

If you are the feather loving chirpy type, head for the largest coastal wetland in San Diego County: San Elijo Lagoon Reserve, home to nearly 300 different bird species throughout the year.

Vivid colors and wild fragrances blended with brilliant sunshine and the humming of bees entice you to take a stroll on the back roads of Encinitas where a year-round flower growing industry thrives. Once recognized as 'the flower capital of the world,' the city can still boast of places like Quail Botanical Garden, which claims it has the largest bamboo collection in the US. It is considered one of the best gardens in San Diego County and well worth a small admission fee charged.

For a sit-in catch a movie at the legendary La Paloma Theatre, also used for plays and concerts.

Sunbathing, swimming, surfing, bird watching, museums and galleries, meditation and enlightenment and flower power are areas of recreation and entertainment most worth mentioning.
